Building-level heat demand across the city of Mainburg

Municipal Heating Plan for Mainburg

Heat PlanningDigital TwinEnergy TransitionGOATBavaria

Overview

A municipal heating plan for the City of Mainburg (around 15,000 residents) in Bavaria, developed by Plan4Better in collaboration with a partner organisation. The goal is a comprehensive heating plan that enables a greenhouse-gas-neutral heat supply by 2045.

A detailed status analysis integrated heat density maps, energy carrier shares, building types, renovation status and GIS data on gas and district heating networks, with a digital twin serving as the central data foundation. The potential analysis explored energy savings, renewable energy and waste-heat use, and the suitability of areas for district heating networks versus individual heating solutions. A target scenario for 2045 set out clear measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency and integrating renewable sources, backed by a measure catalogue with cost, funding and climate-protection profiles for each option.

I carried out the status and potential analysis and produced the cartography and WebGIS for the project, working alongside the partner organisation and colleagues at Plan4Better.

Workflow

Follow the process. Expand a step for the details.

  1. 01Digital Twin & Status AnalysisDetails +

Built a digital twin of the municipality as the central data foundation, integrating heat density maps, energy carrier shares, building types, renovation status and GIS data on gas and district heating networks.

  2. 02Potential AnalysisDetails +

Explored opportunities for energy savings, renewable energy and waste-heat use, and assessed the suitability of each area for district heating networks or individual heating solutions.

  3. 03Target Scenario & Measure CatalogueDetails +

Developed a target scenario for 2045 with clear measures for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and integrating renewable energy, backed by a prioritised measure catalogue with cost, funding and climate-protection profiles.

  4. 04Participation & WebGISDetails +

Ran stakeholder and public engagement through citizen events and workshops, and delivered an interactive WebGIS as a live representation of the digital twin, making results transparent for stakeholders and residents.

Planning Cases

  • Status analysis
  • Potential analysis & target scenario
  • Stakeholder and public participation
  • Provision of the GOAT WebGIS

Tools & Technologies

  • GOAT (Plan4Better) โ€” digital twin, WebGIS delivery and cartographic output
  • Heat density maps and energy carrier share data
  • Building type, renovation status and gas/district heating network GIS data
  • Census 2022 data on energy sources and population

Outcome

Delivered a structured, practical municipal heating plan for Mainburg โ€” a digital twin, a 2045 target scenario and a costed measure catalogue, made transparent to residents and stakeholders through an interactive WebGIS โ€” serving as a model approach for other municipalities pursuing greenhouse-gas-neutral heat supply.
